Review :

‘Hunter’s Revenge’ is my first acquaintance with Val Penny and the second installment of ‘the Edinburgh crime mysteries’.
Although said to be stand alone I personally didn’t find this to be true.
There were just to many characters, in the corps and otherwise, that knew each other and the dynamics between them was a bit lost on me sometimes.
I felt I missed out on stuff that happened before because I hadn’t read the first book.
So I wished for more background or information in the book.
Now I felt a bit left out although I got the story in his whole.
Naturally I realize it’s not easy to do this because a lot of readers read the first book and they don’t want to buy repetition, they want evolution.
However I’m afraid that this is definitely coloring my review because it made me struggle to get into the story.
A pity!
Apart from that I had also a couple of other struggles with this book.
You can talk about the weather and how your main characters feel about it, but it felt, to me at least, as a theme in the beginning.
I also thought that things between () weren’t necessary or could just be said without the use of these markings.
Maybe this sounds like a lot of nit-picking to a lot of you readers, but if it bothers me, I’m just saying it and maybe the writer will think of it in other books or maybe not…. I just like honesty.
And yes, sorry, there’s more!
The biggest trouble I had was with the way the plot clicked.
There were just really a lot of coincidences.
It is possible to meet or see people and make links immediately but that often?
I don’t think so.
It ate away at the believability of the storyline.
A real pity because the plot was otherwise great and I couldn’t find out who the culprit was.
So well done, Val Penny!
As I always try to end on a positive note I’m going to underline that I haven’t read the first one, so new readers start with that installment please.
Furthermore this was a great, easy read with a plot I can’t say not much wrong about.
On the contrary, if the author can disguise whose the killer is until the last pages I’m always very happy.
Definitely worth checking out, in the right order anyways. 😉
