She’s desperate to stop the panic attacks. But the truth won’t set her free…
Jamie Kendal sees life through the bottom of a bottle. After surviving assault and betrayal, she is forced back to her hometown to care for her mother. Not long after her return, she’s plagued by terrifying slivers of memories from the night her twin brother disappeared forever…
Unearthing new evidence, she’s shocked to learn she’d been found wandering in the woods that same night—covered in blood. More than one person from her past hid the haunting truth that’s bubbling to the surface. The deeper she digs into the horrors from her past, the more she fears almost anyone could be a killer, including Jamie herself.
Can Jamie expose what happened that night, or will she join her missing brother?

Q&A :

First of all thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions, I really appreciate it. Here we go! 🙂
Thank you for having me.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I think like most people who make a major career change late in life; it is because I don’t love my current job. I have worked in law enforcement for thirteen years and I like the solitude writing gives me. I’m a people person, but I also enjoy hanging out at my house and working in my P. J’s. I mean, who wouldn’t. I am also a wife and mother of three young children.

Which books did/do you love to read as a child/now as a grown-up?
I read a ton of V. C. Andrews in my teens. I remember those being my favorite books. Now, the sky is the limit. I read many genre’s and enjoy most. I’m talking a wide range from Sci-Fi, fantasy, some YA, romantic suspense, thrillers, and horror. Some of my most recent favorites would be Dark Matter and Where the Crawdads Sing.

Is there a writer whose brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
Dean Koontz. I love his books. He is a master of suspense and atmosphere. Two things I strive for in my own writing. If your skin isn’t tingling, I’m not doing my job. I want readers to feel scared, sad and maybe even sexy. I love evoking different emotions.

If you could, which fictional character (from your own book(s) or someone else’s) would you like to invite for tea and why?
Dolores Claiborne, hands down. It would be like having tea with my angry grandmother. Some real old school stuff. I listened to this on audio, which I highly recommend, and I realized at the end that the whole book was ONE interview. Stephen King is a master. I think for me I love when there is blurred lines between the villian and the hero. Or learning why good people do bad things. It’s not always the reasons we think.

Do you have some rituals or habits whilst writing?
I don’t. I wish I did. I have three young children, so the name of the game is get it done when I can. It’s during nap time or after they go to bed for the night, then my writing can begin.

Where do you come up with your idea(s)? Do people in your life need to be worried? 😉
I think my husband might be worried after my next book comes out. It begins with just a spark of an idea. A secret note found years later and something bad happened… then I expand on that small idea. This is by far my favorite part of the process. I am analytical by nature and it plays right into my stories. Finding the angle of a character’s motivation is a sure way to nail down a solid plot and character arc.

Are you a plotter or do you go with the flow, as a pantser?
I am a hard-core plotter. I plan every scene until The End. That doesn’t mean things won’t change in the revising phase, on the contrary, I am very flexible once the story is written. But readers want to read a story that is interesting, intricate and makes sense. If I pantsed, I can only imagine what it would be at the end.

Can you give novice writers some tips (do’s/don’ts)?
If you are having a hard time finishing that work in progress, try plotting. I know many people think it takes the freedom out of writing, but with a clear goal, you might just finish that book, and who knows, write another one. Also, with that, don’t edit as you go if you can’t seem to get that story done. You could bog down the process with polishing when the story just needs to spring up.

What are your futureplans as an author?
To publish two books a year for now. When the story idea’s stop, then I guess I’ll retire, or go back to school.

Last, but not least : Can you give my readers one teaser from your book, which is featured here on my blog, please?
Instead of waking from a nightmare, Jamie Kendal is living in one. Tortured by an event from her past, she can not remember. Taunted by evidence of her brother’s disappearance and her possible role in the horrifying event. A night she can’t remember… a mystery she must uncover. Can Jamie survive what’s buried in her past?

Isn’t that a great reason to pick up this book and to find out more?!
Thanks once again for this lovely interview, Eva Mackenzie.
