blog-q&a

Today I’m not on a blogtour, but doing my own interview with Camilla Downs, author of ‘Words of Alchemy’, to promote his book.
Before I let you read my Q&As, I’ll first post some ‘basic’ information.

About the Author :

Photo #1 Words of Alchemy Wilbur May Arboretum Rancho San Rafael Lillian and Camilla 5.2.19 #3 camilla selfieCamilla Downs is a bestselling author, indie publisher, mentor, and mom. Nature and life experiences are a constant source of inspiration for her writing. She enjoys living a minimalist lifestyle, practicing meditation and mindfulness, reading, going for walks, and capturing nature’s essence with pPhoto #5 Team TLC Thanksgiving at the Romano Duo's Place 11.22.18 copyhotographs. Camilla is the founder of MeetingtheAuthors.com and lives in Northern Nevada, USA with her two kids, Thomas and Lillian. They call themselves Team TLC to correspond with the first letters of each of their names and share their journey on The Team TLC website (http://www.TheTeamTLC.com). Lillian has a chromosome abnormality simply called 18p-. This means she is missing the short arm of chromosome #18.
In October 2016, her son’s book, “Biggest Little Photographer” was published. At 8 years old, Thomas took on a 365 photo a day project. Every day for one year he took a photo of a minifigure photographer taking a photo. The book contains about half of the photographs along with handpicked quotes by Thomas and Camilla.
In January of 2018 Lillian’s debut book, titled “Where Would You Fly and Other Magical Stories” was published. This is a beautiful book of Lillian’s writings from age 4 to 15 years old. The book also includes Lillian’s artwork and a few of Camilla’s nature photographs.

Q&A :

Hi

First of all thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions, I really appreciate it. Here we go! 🙂

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
My name is Camilla (pronounced like Pamela, but with a C). I have lived in Reno, Nevada, USA for the past 14 years, moving here from the Seattle, Washington area in 2006. I spent my first 18 years in the Jackson, Mississippi area and Houma, Louisiana. I’m mom to two kids, 18 year old Lillian and 14 year old Thomas. Lillian is special needs, having a chromosome deletion called 18p-. I’ve homeschooled both of them for the past 4 or 5 years, with Lillian graduating June 2019.
I became an author with the publication of my first book in 2012, D iz for Different – One Woman’s Journey to Acceptance. I don’t recall wanting to be an author as a young child. However, I don’t remember much of my childhood, so I may have wanted this. In 2011, I simply knew after the events I experienced that I was supposed to share my life with others by writing a memoir, showing how I processed and moved through things.

Which books did/do you love to read as a child/now as a grown-up?
I can’t remember all of them. But, I do know that I enjoyed Beverly Cleary and the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew series.

Is there a writer whose brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
I can’t say that there is a writer whose brain I’d like to pick for advice on writing. However, I would love to have a writer’s crystal ball to help me know what and how to write the next book(s). Do you happen to have one?

If you could, which fictional character (from your own book(s) or someone else's) would you like to invite for tea and why?
I’d like to invite several non-fiction writers for tea or coffee to chat about life, digging deeper than what they’ve written about in their books. They would be Elizabeth Gilbert, Glennon Doyle, Wayne Dyer, Susan Orlean, Mary Oliver, and Michael Singer. I’m sure I’m leaving out some authors.
In regards to fictional characters, recently I really enjoyed the main characters in all of Phaedra Patrick’s books. I would love to meet them in their hometowns, spending a couple of days with each of them exploring the locations in the books, and getting to know them better.

Do you have some rituals or habits whilst writing?
When I wrote my first book, I began to get up 30 minutes earlier than usual, take my coffee and laptop to the patio, and write with Mt. Rose as company. I did not write the chapters in order, as this is an A-Z book (A is for Acceptance, B is for Better, D is for Different … ). I wrote each section as I was inspired, with the book being written in 2 months time.
In regards to my second book, Words of Alchemy, a free verse poetry memoir; I did not sit down to create a book of poetry. One day 6 years ago, poetry just began to flow. Much of the poetry was inspired by nature photographs I had taken on walks. I would look through the photographs with the intent of landing on one that would inspire a poem. Many times, I would listen to Indian flute music, Tibetan singing bowls, or Deva Premal while the poem flowed.
With all of this being said, nature is definitely at the root of any ritual or habit while I’m writing.

Where do you come up with your idea(s)? Do people in your life need to be worried? 😉
Since I write non-fiction, my ideas come from my own life experiences. I’m still working through how to write about people or events that may be uncomfortable for those who were a part of it. I suppose I’ll have that figured out by the time I’ve completed the next book. HA!

Are you a plotter or do you go with the flow, as a pantser?
I’m neither of these. This may be due to the fact that I write non-fiction. I write as I’m inspired. This may also be why I’ve not written fiction yet. HA! I would love to try my hand at writing a creative non-fiction. I’m pretty sure that will be the genre of one of the next books.

Can you give novice writers some tips (do’s/don’ts)?
I do things so different, I’m not sure I have solid tips I could share. I will say the two main ingredients are to write, and have loads of tenacity. Oh, and a third tip … WRITE, just write, no matter what comes out.

What are your futureplans as an author?
I’m taking this year to let myself not write, to press the reset button, to rejuvenate myself. I’ve been on a rather long, 13 year, healing journey. I’m due for some rejuvenation! After that, I do plan on writing and publishing more books. I really won’t know until I get focused on it.

Last, but not least : Can you give my readers one teaser from your book, which is featured here on my blog, please?

The Path of the Heart Words of Alchemy March 2020

The Path of the Heart
The path back home
seems littered with
suffering and struggle.
What is this insane
ability to cause
one’s self such suffering?
Suffering by way of the
thoughts that dart
here and there,
at times penetrating
the soul as if they
were a cold, jagged knife.
When one golden day
the tides of change
bring the knowing
that the path
is also littered
with Love.
A Love shining remarkably
bright and clear,
suffering seems almost
not to have happened.
The path of Love
The path of suffering
The path of struggles
The path of Joy
The path of Harmony
The path of irritation
The path of guilt
The path of Peace.
All the same path
The path that we each travel.
Made to seem different
by way of the degree
of suffering we endure.
Made to seem different
until that glorious day
that we learn
to love ourselves and
to love one another through
everything that happens.
For the things that
happen will still be;
yet, the perception
of each will shift
the more the one
loves one’s self through
the things.
The path of Love.
The path we all
shall arrive upon
one sweet day.
Oh, glory be.
We shall see.

The Lure of Words Words of Alchemy April 2020

The Lure of Words
A love of reading
A love of books
A love of the written word
She has always had.
Devouring one
book after another
after another.
Books here.
Books there.
Books everywhere.
Oh, the sight, the feel,
the sound, the smell.
Intoxicating to even imagine.
Deliberately walking the aisle
of the library,
of the book store,
she feels at home.
Perusing the titles,
gently taking hold of
the book’s spine,
sliding it from the shelf,
slowly running her
fingertips across
the book’s title,
opening the book,
lifting the opened book
to her nose and
inhaling the unique
scent only a book can radiate.
Simply holding, feeling, and
smelling a book
sends here straight away
to other worlds, lands,
and journeys.
When finally opening
the book to begin
the adventure,
a palpable,
stomach tingling
Excitement lures her
to the pages.
This has been the way.
A beautiful way.
A way that led her
to know she was to
write, she was to let
black words flow forth
and fill the white pages,
one after another
after another.
She laughs words
She exhales words
She cries words
She bleeds words
She dances words.
She swallows the words
of life to be mixed and
meshed with her essence.
Magically, as if under a spell,
she releases the words
from her mind’s eye
fast as lightning through
her fingertips onto the screen.
Books, books, books.
Words, words, words.
Words are oxygen
Words are food
Words are water
Words are shelter
Words are life.
Her teacher
Her friend
Her lover
Her mentor
Books are these,
and more,
to she.
A love of reading
A love of books
A love of the written word
She has always had.
Devouring one
book after another
after another.
All the while
the words,
the books,
devoured she.

Isn’t that a great reason to pick up this book and to find out more?!
Thanks once again for this lovely interview, Camilla Downs.
