Avalon – 1500 years ago

“Banish magic from the Kingdoms? Are you mad, Merlin?” screeched Nimbwe over her bubbling cauldron.
Green mist snaked upwards from the suspicious potion towards the white-haired wizard, turning his long beard an awful shade of vomit. Merlin stepped away, flicked the colour from his face and peered over the top of his thin-framed glasses at his oldest friend.
“We’re all in danger, Nimbwe. Morgana’s power is growing, and I fear to an unstoppable strength. She now controls most of the dark elementals; they have sworn their allegiance to her.”
“Why, those pesky little critters. I’ll curse them, I will, Merlin, curse them.”
“Let’s not lose sight of the issue here, Nimbwe.” Merlin coughed, as a pungent odour tickled the back of his throat. He took another step away from the cauldron and eyed the toad-coloured concoction, alarmed as a large bubble rose in the centre and then burst, splashing thick, green goop over the top of the pot. “If we don’t pull magic out of Britain Avalon will collapse, and the Isle of Kingdoms will sink into darkness. Magic will be lost to us forever.” He ducked as Nimbwe grabbed a ladle hanging from a hook above his head.
“And you think now is the time?” she asked, looking up from the pot.
Merlin nodded. “I believe so, my dear friend. Do you know the spell?”
Nimbwe hung the ladle on the side of the black pot and glared at him. “Know it? I created it, you cheeky -”
The room shook with a force that slammed Nimbwe into her crooked wooden shelves. Merlin held onto a cupboard as the contents rattled and clinked. Dust and plaster from the ceiling showered onto them as the roof was ripped off and disappeared into the night sky. A vicious wind blew into Nimbwe’s kitchen and rocked the cauldron; the thick gloop splashed over the sides and sizzled as it hit the floor, burning holes into the stone.
“Merlin!” shouted Nimbwe over the roar of the gale as she tried to steady herself.
A dark purple cloud surged into the room and swarmed around them. Merlin gagged as the cloud formed a hand and grabbed his throat as a high-pitched cackle filled the air.
“Think you can defeat me?” shrieked a voice that caused Merlin’s teeth to rattle. “You are no match for me, Meeeeerlin.”
Merlin glanced at Nimbwe, who was frozen except her eyes, which were blinking furiously. “Morgana,” he wheezed, “You cannot win this war.”
The hand squeezed his throat tighter. “I have already won!” hissed the cloud. “You old fool! Your time is done.”
“Now!” shouted Nimbwe as a flash of light burst from her chest. The potion in her cauldron reacted instantly and ignited into flames. Merlin began to glow, burning the hand from his throat.
“Nooooooooo!” screamed the cloud as the blaze consumed it.
“Carcere, infernum, mortem. Carcere, infernum, mortem. Carcere, infernum, mortem.”
Merlin and Nimbwe chanted simultaneously as the evil cloud writhed and twisted within the fire. The light emanating from the old wizard illuminated the night sky and merged with the flames to form a gold ball that grew until it was above the roofless cottage. The evil entity inside was changing forms. Black hands pushed against the unbreakable sides of the encasement spell, desperate to escape; they morphed into a screaming face, its mouth open wide, a bloodcurdling scream escaping from the figure. The face bubbled and transformed back into hands with long, spindly fingers and pointy, sharp nails incapable of piercing its indestructible prison.
