Q&A :

Hi

First of all thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions, I really appreciate it. Here we go! 🙂
Thank you for having me.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I think like most people who make a major career change late in life; it is because I don’t love my current job. I have worked in law enforcement for thirteen years and I like the solitude writing gives me. I’m a people person, but I also enjoy hanging out at my house and working in my P. J’s. I mean, who wouldn’t. I am also a wife and mother of three young children.

Which books did/do you love to read as a child/now as a grown-up?
I read a ton of V. C. Andrews in my teens. I remember those being my favorite books. Now, the sky is the limit. I read many genre’s and enjoy most. I’m talking a wide range from Sci-Fi, fantasy, some YA, romantic suspense, thrillers, and horror. Some of my most recent favorites would be Dark Matter and Where the Crawdads Sing.

Is there a writer whose brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
Dean Koontz. I love his books. He is a master of suspense and atmosphere. Two things I strive for in my own writing. If your skin isn’t tingling, I’m not doing my job. I want readers to feel scared, sad and maybe even sexy. I love evoking different emotions.

If you could, which fictional character (from your own book(s) or someone else’s) would you like to invite for tea and why?
Dolores Claiborne, hands down. It would be like having tea with my angry grandmother. Some real old school stuff. I listened to this on audio, which I highly recommend, and I realized at the end that the whole book was ONE interview. Stephen King is a master. I think for me I love when there is blurred lines between the villian and the hero. Or learning why good people do bad things. It’s not always the reasons we think.

Do you have some rituals or habits whilst writing?
I don’t. I wish I did. I have three young children, so the name of the game is get it done when I can. It’s during nap time or after they go to bed for the night, then my writing can begin.

Where do you come up with your idea(s)? Do people in your life need to be worried? 😉
I think my husband might be worried after my next book comes out. It begins with just a spark of an idea. A secret note found years later and something bad happened… then I expand on that small idea. This is by far my favorite part of the process. I am analytical by nature and it plays right into my stories. Finding the angle of a character’s motivation is a sure way to nail down a solid plot and character arc.

Are you a plotter or do you go with the flow, as a pantser?
I am a hard-core plotter. I plan every scene until The End. That doesn’t mean things won’t change in the revising phase, on the contrary, I am very flexible once the story is written. But readers want to read a story that is interesting, intricate and makes sense. If I pantsed, I can only imagine what it would be at the end.

Can you give novice writers some tips (do’s/don’ts)?
If you are having a hard time finishing that work in progress, try plotting. I know many people think it takes the freedom out of writing, but with a clear goal, you might just finish that book, and who knows, write another one. Also, with that, don’t edit as you go if you can’t seem to get that story done. You could bog down the process with polishing when the story just needs to spring up.

What are your futureplans as an author?
To publish two books a year for now. When the story idea’s stop, then I guess I’ll retire, or go back to school.

Last, but not least : Can you give my readers one teaser from your book, which is featured here on my blog, please?
Instead of waking from a nightmare, Jamie Kendal is living in one. Tortured by an event from her past, she can not remember. Taunted by evidence of her brother’s disappearance and her possible role in the horrifying event. A night she can’t remember… a mystery she must uncover. Can Jamie survive what’s buried in her past?

Isn’t that a great reason to pick up this book and to find out more?!
Thanks once again for this lovely interview, Eva Mackenzie.

Excerpt :

Clink, clink, clink. The sound of Rhona’s sword striking Perin’s grew louder as she tried harder to take his ass down. Eight times … eight times he had caught her off guard and she’d fallen at his feet, practically prepared to kiss his boot.
She could beat everyone else, but never Perin. This was the one skill she wanted to best him in. Her mother, Thea, sat on one of the benches, watching, her long blonde hair falling over her shoulder. Noticing her daughter’s concerned gaze, Thea shrugged in a delicate manner—as if to imply Rhona shouldn’t worry if she lost again.
“You can do it, Rhona. But I’m not going to make it easy for you,” Perin said in a serious tone.
“You’re a real bastard sometimes.” Laughing, she lunged at him. He was quick, boots angling to the side as he brought up his sword to block hers.
Belen held up a hand. “Continue. I’ll meet with you two later. I have a meeting with Thea.” Rhona’s gaze drifted to her mother, who set down a cup of tea at her side next to Jasmine. The doe-eyed girl stared lustfully at Perin’s muscles.
Rhona narrowed her eyes at Belen’s back as he walked toward Thea. Perin caught her devilish stare and shook his head for her to stop. She didn’t.
“I’ll see you in a little while,” her mother called before leaving with Belen’s hand loosely holding onto her elbow.
It was now only the two of them left outside—everyone else had gone off to do other things—except for Jasmine who hadn’t taken her eyes off Perin. His sleeves were rolled up, shirt drenched, and his forearms slicked with sweat—the whole scene had Rhona rolling her eyes. She lifted her sword. “Just go with Jasmine at the next fire.”
When the moons were at their fullest, the villagers would celebrate with a bonfire where they would toss something into the flames in hopes of a wish. The wishes weren’t real, but the idea of dreaming about something had its appeal, especially after she lost everything. But for the past two years, Rhona hadn’t gone because there was nothing to wish for. Even though there is, a voice spoke in her head.
“There is,” she whispered.
“What is?” Perin arched a brow.
She shook her head. “Nothing, just go.”
“And no, I don’t want to go with Jasmine.” He swung his sword, striking hers and making her hand vibrate. “I’d rather be alone.”
“But you talk to me.”
“That’s because you need me.”
“Nah, I think you need me maybe a little more.” She thrust her sword and tried to kick his feet out from underneath him, but it didn’t work. It was as if he knew every move she’d make before she did it.
Rhona looked over her shoulder to tell Jasmine she needed to try harder with Perin, but the girl had already left. She turned her head back to Perin, who had an apologetic expression on his face as he shot forward. With a stumble, she tripped over her own feet, falling on her ass. “You could have waited.”
“You could have tried to not set me up with Jasmine, too.”
Even though he was now twenty, she’d never seen Perin with a man or a woman. Not that there was anything wrong with that, but something, or someone, needed to take his frown away—the same that was on his face right now.
“You do know I used to have an ability that could dehydrate you, in turn making me win.” One she desperately wanted back.
“Then that would have been cheating, now wouldn’t it?” Perin reached a hand toward her to help her up. Giving him a hard stare, she placed her hand into his. Even after all these years of growing up together, he was still a true friend.
As she brushed the dirt from her pants, Perin glanced over his shoulder. “I need to show you something.”
Rhona peered in the direction of his gaze but didn’t see anything that held her interest. There were only rows of weeping willow trees and the cone-shaped tents. “Does my friend have a dirty little secret he’d like to share?”
“Just come on.” Pivoting on his heels, he waved her forward. “We need to be fast.”
Fast? Rhona’s frown mirrored Perin’s. “All right.” Something seemed different about him, his jaw clenched tighter than usual and his shoulders tense.

Excerpt :

Uncle Rocky did his best to join the kids on the floor but resorted to an old, overstuffed club chair instead. No sooner had the man gotten settled when Rani’s face changed.
“What’s that?” she said.
Flashing lights were beaming into the attic through the little window and dancing wildly around the room. The group quickly clustered around the opening.
Lanny grabbed the binoculars hanging nearby and trained them on the source. It took some time before the light show stopped interfering with his vision. “It’s Mask Face! On the Quince Street Footbridge!” he shouted, lowering the binoculars.
Lexi yanked them from her brother, taking his neck along with the strap, and aimed them out the window. “You’re right. Eww! It’s creepy,” she replied as goosebumps ran down her arms.
The figure had turned the flashlight onto its mask, creating the illusion of a disembodied head floating across the bridge.

Strange Blood: 71 Essays on Offbeat and Underrated Vampire Movies by Vanessa Morgan (ebook)

This is an overview of the most offbeat and underrated vampire movies spanning nine decades and 23 countries.

Strange Blood encompasses well-known hits as well as obscurities that differ from your standard fang fare by turning genre conventions on their head. Here, vampires come in the form of cars, pets, aliens, mechanical objects, gorillas, or floating heads. And when they do look like a demonic monster or an aristocratic Count or Countess, they break the mold in terms of imagery, style, or setting. Leading horror writers, filmmakers, actors, distributors, academics, and programmers present their favorite vampire films through in-depth essays, providing background information, analysis, and trivia regarding the various films. Some of these stories are hilarious, some are terrifying, some are touching, and some are just plain weird. Not all of these movies line up with the critical consensus, yet they have one thing in common: they are unlike anything you’ve ever seen in the world of vampires. Just when you thought that the children of the night had become a tired trope, it turns out they have quite a diverse inventory after all.

Peripheral Visions: The Complete Ghost Stories 1988-2015 by Robert Hood (ebook)

Peripheral Visions is a unique reference collection that includes all of Robert Hood’s 44 ghost stories to date, three of them especially written for this volume. These memorable tales display Hood’s uncanny ability to make the fantastic real, to embrace weirdness and create human characters whose lives – both inner and outer – haunted by mortality, are laid bare and revealed to be our own worst nightmares. Ranging from melancholy reflection on life and death, through disquieting tales of dark humour and vengeance, to chilling visions of ghostly apocalypse. Hood’s stories are sure to draw you into a terrifying world that in the end is revealed to be irrefutably our own. Though many of these stories draw on the traditions of the past, they are far from traditional in approach.
As you turn each page remember this: not everything here is as it seems. There’s always something more, barely glimpsed, out there on the periphery.
Each section has an evocative, disturbing illustration by noted artist, Nick Stathopoulos.

Synopsis :

Murder is a DebateTitle: Murder is a Debate
Genre: YA Mystery Thriller

Nora and her two best friends, Liv and Charlie, aren’t like most people. Nora is the private school kid; the rich girl, though everyone hates her. Liv and Charlie attend the run-down public school on the opposite side of town where the football team is a solid two and the art department was shut down due to funding. Their worlds should have never collided, but they had one common factor that brought them together, murder.
In an online mystery chat room, the three girls meet and decide to form The Murder Club. Each week one of the girls must come up with a murder scenario for the other two to solve. It’s fun. It’s active. It’s also deadly.
When one of Nora’s classmates ends up dead, she’s suspicious of her new friends. His death mirrors the very same scenario Nora came up with in their previous meeting. As clues emerge, pointing more definitively at the members of the Murder Club, Nora begins digging for her own clues, bringing fantasy to reality. Could Liv and Charlie be involved, and if so why?
They were all curious. Was one of them too curious?

About the Authors :

elizabeth-knox-staff-graphic_origLiz Knox is the paranormal pen name for international bestselling author Elizabeth Knox. Courtney Lynn rose_300x300Courtney Lynn Rose grew up in Baltimore and is pretty sure she threw her ability to give a f**k into the Inner Harbor long before high school. Like almost every writer on the planet, she started writing at a very young age. Her “way with words” led to her being the go-to person for writing funeral speeches for a long time.
Today she lives in East Tennessee with her children and spends a majority of her time writing things that makes people smile while cutting their emotions deep, and running her own professional editing company. Her novels pull from life and bring to light the things she holds fiercely in her DNA–abuse and addiction survival, domestic violence, and above all, the notion and belief that love, loyalty, and friendship are the bonds which hold every relationship together.

Iris Sweetwater_300x227Iris Sweetwater grew up in the south in a large family. She began writing when she was only four years old, finding a special love for poetry and telling crazy stories. As an adult, she spent a lot of time in the marketing world before finding her niche in ghostwriting and editing. Finally, she got to a point where she felt it was time to get her own work out there, so she began to self-publish. She hopes to make it a career one day to support her wonderful family on. She loves books, movies, dance workouts, chocolate, and little adventures

Nikki Landis_225x300Nikki Landis is an Amazon bestselling and award-winning paranormal, reverse harem, & sci-fi romance author. She’s been addicted to romance and alpha heroes since she used to sneak her mother’s ‘bodice rippers’ as a teen and now writes her own. Nikki’s recent novel Refugee Road won the IPPY Gold Medal for 2017 BEST ROMANCE/EROTICA.

Lulu M. Sylvian_225x300Bio-engineered to be the only redhead in a generation of blonds, Lulu M. Sylvian feels that “aliens” may actually be the best answer for a lifetime of being asked, “Where did you get that red hair from?”
She did not come into writing from years of scribbling words on paper. Her background is rooted in visual arts and making pictures. Encouraged to make those pictures out of words Lulu began writing just to see what would happen.

Kendra Moreno_206x300Kendra Moreno lives in Texas where the summers are scorching, and the iced tea is straight sugar. When she isn’t writing, she likes to go on real life adventures with her husband and son and hopes to one day scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef.

Nikki Hunter_300x300Nikki Hunter is a mom and wife, but also a Friends nerd. When she’s not writing she spends her time binge watching Seven Brides for Seven Brothers while making her husband crazy.

A K Koonce_300x300A.K. Koonce is a USA Today best selling author. She’s a mom by day and a fantasy and paranormal romance author by night. She keeps the fantastical stories in her mind on an endless loop, while she tries her best to focus on her actual life and not that of the spectacular but demanding fictional characters who always fill her thoughts.
