Review :

‘His Guilty Secret’ by Hélene Fermont is a character-driven psychological crime fiction type of book, which isn’t my usual reading genre, but you can say I’m a curious woman and wanted to know the big secret.
Moreover there was a mentioning of Malmö in the synopsis and as I’m learning Swedish I thought it would make an interesting connection for me.
When I started reading I was immediately quite intrigued by what happened and curious about how it would affect everything afterwards.
Unfortunately for me it wasn’t really crime related, it was more an exploration of life and the rippling effects secrets (Yes, he’s not the only one with a secret!) and the past can have on the now.
I soon found it too much of the same, every relationship in this book is about identical on a lot, and at the same time too less, as there is so much going on, nothing is really that elaborated.
In my humble opinion it could be more about his secret, but then it should be more shocking or perhaps better concealt?!
Don’t get me wrong however, it was rather interesting as it gives an insight into real life and how events can affect us, even after several years.
It makes you think about how we conduct ourselves in every day life and how relationships work (or not).
Sounds boring maybe, but it absolutely isn’t as the author knows how to write and keep her readers captivated.
For me though it wasn’t quite what I was expecting I believe, but alltogether a fine read that explores relationships in a realistic kind of way.

Synopsis :

51nmFp-3wuLIs it ever too late for love?

When Mike dumps Louise on their 20th Wedding Anniversary, her entire world comes to an end.
Devastated and confused, she attempts to make sense of what happened and returns to a city she’s avoided for two decades.
Will she be able to move on with the man she left behind or will Mike’s increasingly violent and unhinged behaviour continue to haunt and ruin her life? When the reason Mike left her at long last is revealed Louise’s life is in serious danger.

Excerpt :

Increasingly concerned for Abby and Timmy, Camilla decided to confide in Paige. They were in the study, designing the finishing touches to the Forever Yours website when Camilla said, “Did I mention Abby was abused by her father?”
“I can’t remember. I guess you didn’t. It’s not something I’d forget,” Paige replied, not overly concerned about a woman who willingly got entangled with any man who propositioned her.
“It’s something Abby said when we last saw each other. Trine Larsen thinks Mike’s mentally ill.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Trine’s overreacting. She and Jasper never approved of him. Can’t say I do either after the stunt he pulled on Louise.”
“Perhaps you’re right, yet I’ve a feeling that bank account has a lot to do with it.”
“You’ve got a lot to learn about married men. Many keep their wives in the dark – I’m living proof of that.”
“Abby’s not dependent on a man. In fact it’s the furthest thing from her mind! Having affairs and engaging with dubious dealers and taking risks, sure. She positively thrives on it, yet that’s as far as it goes. I know how you feel about her and won’t mention her again.” Camilla’s voice was subdued.
Ever since she’d moved in with Paige, both women got on well and enjoyed working together on the strategy of Forever Yours.
“I’ve no doubt Abby looks after number one. She’s the kind of woman who loves a challenge and getting the upper hand. I wouldn’t put it past her to steal from Mike’s account. What Abby wants Abby gets, including my soon to be ex-husband.” Paige frowned. She’d already decided she wouldn’t allow that brash woman to come between her and a happy future, but there was one detail concerning her. “Do you suppose it was she who stole Mike’s money?”
“If she did, Mike will find out. It’s only a matter of time. Abby and the baby will be at risk.” Camilla paced the room. She and Abby weren’t as close as they used to be yet Camilla didn’t wish her or the baby any harm.
“I ought to get in touch with her, seeing as she may hold the key to my problem. If Mike and Steve are trying to trick me out of my share of that account, Abby’s got no option but to confess to her part in it. Either that or I’ll make sure the three of them are prosecuted!” Paige went up to the side table and poured herself another mug of herbal tea. She’d vowed to cut down on her intake of sweets, coffee and biscuits, hoping to shed half a stone so she could fit into the new dress Liam had chosen for her when they visited Harrods a few weeks ago. He said she ought to get used to receiving gifts from time to time. It was Liam’s way of reassuring her she needn’t go without anything since, unlike Steve, he would always put her needs before his own.
If Steve and Mike had conspired to trick her, Paige knew she’d find out via her attorney. Excusing herself, she told Camilla she had to prepare dinner. “Josh and Alec are coming round later but I’ve got to buy the ingredients for lasagne as it’s their favourite dish. Please hold the fort if anyone calls,” she lied, not willing to let on she and Natasha had arranged to meet in a café on Richmond Hill.
Putting on the new coat Liam had insisted on buying her, Paige rushed out the front door and drove to Richmond. Exactly on time, she spotted Natasha sitting in the café, reading a daily paper.
“You sounded so frantic over the phone I came as quickly as I could,” Natasha said. You must fill me in on what Camilla said Abby told her.” She was constantly worried that Mike would turn up when she and Robert least expected it.
“I know someone hacked into Mike’s secret account,” Paige replied. “Wait till you hear this. Camilla thinks it’s Abby!”
“Does she have any proof?”
“Not really, only what Abby told her about how skilled she is when it comes to hacking into someone’s account. It takes someone as inhuman as her to do something like that.”
“Have you talked to Trine Larsen?” Natasha didn’t like what she heard. Soon Mike would accuse all of them of tampering with his laptop. “It’s got nothing to do with us. I’ve got to leave. Robert’s picking me up. We’re attending a charity ball in the West End in aid of children with autism. Robert sponsors them whenever he can find the time.”
“I’ve not found the time to call Trine. Besides, she won’t admit anything seeing as she and Jasper are Louise’s friends. We’ll have to stay patient and see how things unravel. I don’t think that baby is at risk. Mike wouldn’t harm his own child . . .” Yet as Paige thought of it, it dawned on her it may be Steve who was the baby’s father, in which case he’d not only lied to her but also to his best friend.
Waving goodbye, Paige decided to get in touch with Trine. It was high time she got some answers and Louise was bound to have confided details of Mike’s laptop to her closest friend.
