Young illustrators

Thanks so much for inviting me onto your blog. I’m so excited to share a bit about the amazing young artists I had the very great honour of working with.
I think the best bit about being a kids’ author, is getting to meet them! Working with them is such a privilege and I love every minute – school visits, workshops, creative writing clubs, I even used to be a trustee for a children’s charity. It’s one reason I run my free #kidsclub. Anyway, I’ve always got about a million ideas for events and activities on the go, so it’s no surprise that what started as a fun workshop in a library one afternoon quickly snowballed, as these things tend to, into a full-scale illustration competition. After the idea had popped into my head, I couldn’t resist it. I’d never seen it done before, and everyone I spoke to thought it was unique and exciting. The idea was that the readers of Eternal Seas could illustrate the sequel, Wild Sky. I knew I needed the illustrations to fit the story and set a number of categories for the drawings, but I kept them pretty generic to give the youngsters plenty of scope.
For the next few weeks I was overwhelmed by the number and quality of the entries – several schools participated plus there were individual entries from all around the country. It was incredibly hard narrowing it down to just six pictures.
Yazeed’s monster faces were so striking and absolutely perfect for the type of engravings you might find on stone tablets in the Shrouded Crypt that I actually had to write them into the manuscript!
Lucy’s cat face has such an amazing expression that I had changed Hobnob from being a black cat (as he was in my mind) to a tabby just to fit. And Chloe’s “butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth” cat was spot on for his personality.
Emily’s ponies crossing a meadow were spot on for the scene at the start of the trek as they gallop across the plains towards the mountains.
Yaqoob’s confidently drawn demon oozes power and I hope it’s not too scary for my younger readers!
Eagles were the most popular category and I really struggled to pick. In the end, Georgie’s stunning eagle soaring over snow-capped mountains was irresistible, and the eagle flying straight at you with wings outstretched by Stephanos caught my eye straight away and was perfect for a really important scene. So rather than just one winner in this category, I ended up with two.
All these illustrations will be published in Wild Sky and the runners up featured on my website. I’m sure you’ll agree they’re all super talented and I hope we see more from these young artists in the future.
Here are a few of them with their illustrations.
