Top Ten Things about Malcolm

1. Malcolm is the third brother, and one of five siblings in Clan Colquhoun.
2. He insists he has black hair, but one woman (ahem Andreona, the heroine he’s past due to love) insists he has red in it like the rest of his clan.
3. He’s rash, impulsive, and quick to temper.
4. His eyes are green. Or…as Andreona notices: ‘His eyes were the colour of grass in the summer sun and spring foliage on trees. But nothing so still or tranquil. Certainly, nothing of celebration or renewal. Unrest roiled and retribution turned. That colour was never meant for such wrath and determination. But it was all that was there and none of it felt new. Which was foolish, she knew, for how could any man hold rage for long?’
5. Yeah, I wrote that kind of hero. The kind who loves, but who loses that love. Who has honour and bravery, only to be betrayed. Who gets up and attempts and tries, but keeps getting knocked down. By the time he meets Andreona, he isn’t getting up again. He’s cynical, cruel, and someone whom she really needs to say: “Pass!”
6. But Andreona knows what it’s like to be betrayed and to lose love. She, however, also knows what it takes to believe again. It takes a few hundred pages for Malcolm to start listening though. Stubborn Scot.
7. Her Legendary Highlander is a standalone, but Malcolm’s in previous books: The Knight’s Broken Promise, Her Enemy Highlander, and The Highland Laird’s Bride.
8. Along the way he made enemies of his family, the Warstones, The Englishman Sir Richard Howe, the mercenaries hired by the Warstones and Sir Howe, etc. Basically, he’s on the verge of being killed or thrown into pit. So he meets Andreona with a bit of baggage.
9. He’s got a friend though, Finlay, who’s also in The Highland Laird’s Bride, and he’s halfway through with his quest to reunite the legendary Jewell of Kings with the hollowed dagger, so that must be good, right? (So good, whew).
10. It took me forever to write this story and finish the series, but I hope the wait is worth it. All I know is the Epilogue made me cry.

Synopsis :

An innocent maiden
And a legendary warrior
When captured and held prisoner in an enemy castle, Margery of Lyon is guarded by brooding mercenary Evrart, who’s been commanded to watch her – day and night. Margery’s determination to escape brings her closer to Evrart, and the kind heart hidden beneath his granite-hard body. Now Margery is torn, fleeing under the portcullis will mean leaving behind the man she’s falling for…

Excerpt :

Margery of Lyon is held captive by Ian of Warstone who has appointed a guard to watch her. The guard (the hero Evrart) is a quiet giant of man, and Margery is very short (think The Mountain from GOT and his wife). This is the moment when he’s first assigned to watch her, and they’re climbing the stairs to enter the room she’ll be imprisoned in. Though she is terrified for herself, Margery is very friendly, Evrart is as silent as a mountain and is used to be being terrified of him, not trying to chat him up.

She swallowed hard. ‘You’re very quiet.’
He said nothing.
She looked up…then up again. His arms were at his sides, his eyes steady, and all that stillness caused something to seethe within her. He was large, but then everyone was larger than her. It was how it had always been.
But being in this fortress, trapped and threatened by Ian of Warstone, wasn’t how it had always been. If only she could wave a sword or conduct her own threats.
The seething turned to roiling. If only she had some way to protect herself! Not just standing here staring out of a window, feeling waves of helplessness, as this man—this warrior, her guard—watched her tremble, heard her teeth chatter whilst he was constant stillness, relentless silence.
‘How will you guard me if you don’t speak?’ she asked.
His brow rose, and she swore she saw the corner of his lip twitch.
Maybe it was the terror, maybe it was because her reason had finally fled, but Margery laughed. It was a choked laugh. More strident than joyful. More sobbing than anything humorous.
And when his brows rose more and his eyes widened…when wariness that couldn’t just be wariness entered his eyes again…the noises she emitted came out harder, until tears sprang from her eyes and she had to brush them away.
She noticed the poor man hadn’t moved, but he seemed to be leaning back. Not with displeasure or cruelty. Not to smirk or laugh—though he should be because of her ridiculous question. But simply to stand there, a bit away from her. And whereas before she’d equated his silence with displeasure, his restraint with formidable trapping walls, now she saw it wasn’t. It truly wasn’t.
It was the way he blinked, and his careful movements as he straightened himself. He was disconcerting because for days she’d been plagued with violence and threats. For months…years…before that, she’d had Josse, Roul, the mercenaries who’d leered and calculated.
When her hood had fallen, he hadn’t elbowed the man next to him. He’d simply looked at her as he looked at her now. Like…a person. And maybe it wasn’t wise, maybe she was wrong, maybe she truly had lost her reason, but she didn’t care that he was quiet. It didn’t mean she had to be.
Resting her hand on his forearm, she said, ‘Don’t mind me—truly. I am harmless. Well, maybe not completely, but I’m not likely to cause any permanent wounding.’
Patting his arm before releasing her touch, she brushed her hands down her skirts, gathered herself, and gave him as reassuring a smile as she could. He wasn’t like Ian or those other guards. Maybe he was like that man with the bloodied apron—the butcher who’d had a happy smile. Maybe they could start again.
Maybe they couldn’t.
His eyes were the size of the moon and his hand gripped his forearm where… She was right. His hand was gripping his arm, right where she’d touched him. His knuckles were white.
With anger?
Was he injured and she’d inadvertently harmed him?
‘Oh!’ she said. ‘Did I hurt you?’
He said nothing, but his eyes grew intent. She felt terrible.
She grabbed his fingers to pull his hand away. ‘Here, let me see it.’
She didn’t know what she’d do, but there she’d been, laughing because she couldn’t harm him, and then she had. She was worried, terrified, but this man hadn’t done anything to her and here she was—
‘No,’ he said, and pulled his hand away from her.
All the while he kept his gaze on her. His hands were rough, his fingers felt thick, but his touch was inordinately gentle.
It was his voice, though, that made her shiver. Deep, gruff. Exactly the voice she’d expected from a man with shoulders that could protect her from a storm.
She held still. ‘Say something else.’
He stared at her so hard she thought he would see to the other side of her before that corner of his mouth quirked again. Was he trying to smile but couldn’t?
‘No,’ he repeated.
Something came over her. Something that wanted him to smile. What was wrong with her? She didn’t need to laugh with this man or ask if he was hurt. His hair might be wet as if was like everyone else who bathed, and he might look vaguely annoyed rather than cruel, but she needed to escape!
As if he’d guessed her thoughts, he abruptly let her hand free and pointed again.
Resolved to do what she must, she continued down the corridor. Before she closed the garderobe door, though, she said, ‘And you’ll stand out here? Then take me to that room and lock me in?’
When he crossed his arms, she answered herself.
‘Of course you will.’

Synopsis :

She hates all Warstones.
Can this one win her love?
Balthus of Warstone secretly loved Séverine, even though she was unhappily married to his brute of a brother, then she fled six years ago. Now her husband is dead, Balthus must find Séverine and reclaim her sons as his father’s heirs. Balthus’ desire is to claim her too, and despite his battle-maimed arm and her distrust of his family, he’ll prove he’s a suitor worthy of such a courageous woman…

Guest Post :

Top Ten Things About Balthus of Warstone

1. Balthus is the youngest son in a typical Medieval family: Mother, father, four brothers. The mother likes to hold her sons’ left hand to a flame to test loyalty. The father likes to hang them from a ladder until their shoulders’ dislocate or they give up.
2. Okay, maybe the Warstones aren’t a typical family.
3. Might explain why two of the brothers, Ian and Guy, die horrible deaths (the author admits it was difficult bumping off Ian, but Guy, who killed a dog, had to go). The other two sons have risen against their parents. Reynold left the family unscathed, but Balthus…not so much. That flame thing his mother likes to do? He lost his hand.
4. All good now though…’cause The Knight’s Runaway Maiden is his HEA.
5. He’s in several books in the Lovers and Legends Series: Her Dark Knight’s Redemption, and The Maiden and the Mercenary. He was supposed to die in The Maiden, but I just couldn’t do it.
6. It wasn’t because of his tragic childhood, or that he was just too charming, it was because he was trying to be better. So, of course, I had to give him his own HEA.
7. But with whom? This story came out of nowhere, so I had to ask him, and I’m glad I did.
8. He’s been in love with the same unobtainable woman since he was young man: his sister-in-law, married to his eldest brother, Ian.
9. Thus, I killed off Ian and let Balthus live so he…. No, no, no I didn’t. Balthus didn’t even tell me he loved Severine until after Ian died, and even then, it was reluctantly.
10. Why? Because he didn’t want to still be in love her, and she ran away from the Warstones six years ago. Clearly, she doesn’t want anything to do with his family. Except…well, I killed off Ian and now Balthus needs to let her know. So off he goes on a quest to find her. (Psst, he does find her).

Top Ten things about the Heroine Biedeluue

1. I’m very aware that the heroine’s name is close to Beetlejuice. This was not intentional, but I can’t vouch for my subconscious since Biedeluue’s antics can lean towards Tim Burton at times.
2. Though I try to avoid it, I’m also very aware that my heroines’ often adopt aspects of what’s happening in my own life (not too much, they are usually more plucky then me,…oh, and Medieval). However, Biedeluue may have adopted a bit more of my traits than most.
3. Of course, I only wish I was as curvy and gorgeous as she, but the inspiration for Bied is Lulu Bonfils.
4. Biedeluue’s the kind of heroine I love: feisty, opinionated, takes risks, and is absolutely loyal to her family.
5. She can’t cook, hates cleaning, and doesn’t care for the great outdoors.
6. She charges forward, and never waits for help. This can be good, but also gets her in trouble.
7. She’s had a difficult childhood. In Medieval times, children had games and such, but survival, especially amongst non-nobility, was key. For Biedeluue, it definitely defined her, but she doesn’t dwell on it.
8. She had to do something in her past to protect her sister. How far would you go? If your younger sibling was threatened how far would you go?
9. The story is a series, but can absolutely be read as a standalone. Why? If I’m reading a story and I don’t get a beginning middle and a HEA, I am piqued. So, the story’s complete.
10. She’s absolutely smashed when she meets the hero and stares at his ‘blue, blue eyes. So many eyes when the rest of them had two. Unfair!’

Top Ten things about the hero Eldric of Hawksmoor:

1. He looks like Brock O’Hurn, so yeah, I loved doing the research, and describing him, and…and…and.
2. Eldric was in a previous book: Her Christmas Knight as a friend of Hugh’s.
3. Whilst talking to Hugh, he mentions that the three perfect scars on his arm are caused by an Archer who will pay for his dishonourable deeds.
4. Little does he know the Archer is a woman.
5. He also doesn’t know he dances with that same woman at a Christmas Ball (she’s in disguise). He kinda liked dancing with her…and thinks about her a lot.
6. So when he meets this Archer (aka the fight), he’s a little torn and intrigued, full of lust and loathing, and…and…and.
7. Instead of killing her, he captures her. Romance ensues.
8. The problem with the Archer’s secrets, which involves the scars on the arm, is that they are juicy secrets. They also conflict with all of Eldric’s secrets.
9. Oh! And he whistles. All the time. In fact, that’s how the Archer first noticed Eldric…when she was a child. And over the years, she observes him again, and again, and again.
10. You see…she’s always loved him, and though he realises their connection may be a bit stronger than revenge, all those secrets may keep them from their HEA.

Excerpt :

In a private library in Paris, a scene between the hero/a villain Reynold, who kidnapped the heroine/a thief, Aliette. Here is an argument that turns into a kiss, that turns into….

Reynold’s eyes narrowed; his jaw clenched. Victory. He hated when she withheld opinions. But he held his secrets. With so much was at stake, Aliette deserved to know.
Ignoring his glare, she strode to one of the tables, found exactly the book she wanted and sat down on the bench to read.
She didn’t need to look at the man behind the desk to know her deeds struck him. He didn’t like secrets of any sort and this one she’d delighted to withhold from him over the last sennight.
‘You’re reading a book,’ he said.
‘You taught me.’ Days at his side, she’d learned his ability to wait was a tactic. She didn’t lift her eyes. This time, she would wait. She turned a page, then another. All the while she felt his gaze on her.
‘For how long?’ he said.
‘A while now.’
Even sitting as she was and him half-hidden, she could feel the tension, see him vibrating with some unknown force. He more than flexed his fingers now, he clenched his burned fist. ‘You had me reading to you.’
She lifted a shoulder and turned another page.
‘Why did you pick that book?’
Because since the first day he had brought her in here he’d kept picking up this particular book and setting it down. Because he looked tortured, knowing this story existed. Out of all the stories in this room he avoided this one and she didn’t know why. It was a secret and she wanted him to break. She’d do anything for her family. Needed to know the danger they were in.
‘I like the title: The Odyssey,’ she said.
‘There are other more interesting stories.’
‘I don’t think so.’ She closed the book, ran a hand down its spine. ‘It’s lovely. Far lovelier than anything else in here. Why is that?’
He now rubbed his thumb along the burn in his hand. ‘I had it commissioned.’
Wealth. She knew he had it in abundance, but this was something else. He loved his books…and so he had them made. ‘You ordered this book made.’
‘From some monks at a monastery in Spain.’
‘Have you ordered others?’
At his curt nod, she looked around his room, then down at her lap. ‘Where are those?’
He made some sound from his chest. As though he was surprised, and pleased. ‘Those I gave to the monks at the monastery.’
‘Were they expecting that?’
‘What do you think?’
She thought it made him angry and uneasy he was sharing details of his life. Especially details that displayed a more generous man than she would have guessed. But he did it in some vague desperation to stop her reading this story.
So she returned to reading the story. ‘It seems to be about a husband trying to return to his wife.’
‘A trivial endeavour. If you can read, there are tales here worthy of your new skill.’
But he had the book made, unlike the others. She flipped through the pages. ‘Odysseus suffered to return to Penelope, didn’t he? It reads his mother died of grief while he was gone. He must have been gone for a long time.’ A few more pages. ‘Oh! He lost some ships. Did he make it to his wife? Perhaps I should read the ending first.’
He slapped his hand on his desk. ‘Put it away—it’s not yours.’
Ah. ‘You took me and my family away from our life, from our things. You told me I had no choice. None of this is mine, you made sure of that. This book.’ She set the book down and stood. Her fingers went to the laces on her gown. ‘The clothes I’m wearing aren’t—’
‘Stop!’ His chair banged against the wall as Reynold stood. Swift strides and he was grasping her arms in his calloused hands. ‘You have changed everything. Everything! And you’re not even aware of it.’
A quick yank that lifted her to her toes, a growl, and his lips slammed to hers. To take as she had. His game, his life. To punish. Because he could do it no other way.
But punishment turned to desire, to lust as her lips and her body yielded. Her slight body pressed to his, shivered, his hands drawing her closer, wanting those trembles to be his as well. His.

Q&A :

Hi

First of all thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions, I really appreciate it. Here we go! 🙂
It’s lovely to be here!

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I’ve been reading romances forever, and it was inevitable that I attempt to write them. But oh, boy did that take some time! My first few were saved to discs dated decades ago. But it wasn’t until I went on a castle trip to Wales that it all made sense. I saw the stories all there…then it became a matter of writing them….and I’m still writing them.

Which books did/do you love to read as a child/now as a grown-up?
Well, once I discovered romances in my teens, I’ve been devoted to reading them. But I’ve been known to read Rowling, Lewis and Tolkien along the way, too. Before that? I’d have to say: King of the Wind, Anne of Green Gables, Bunnicula (about a vampire bunny…because those have to exist).

Is there a writer whose brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
Can I pick them all? If I had to pick just one, it would have to be the cartoonist, Gary Larson. I laugh at all his jokes, but I just can’t think like he does!

If you could, which fictional character (from your own book(s) or someone else’s) would you like to invite for tea and why?
I think I’ve been to tea with all my characters…and the refrigerator (we eat a lot of late-night snacks together).

Do you have some rituals or habits whilst writing?
I’m in the habit of the non-habit. Except with certain foods (tea, Haribos, popcorn), the rest of it is just higgledy-piggledy. I wish I could have a habit, but I’ve got two kids. So I write or chat when I can. Like now…it’s 11pm.

Where do you come up with your idea(s)? Do people in your life need to be worried? 😉
Luckily for my friends and family, they’re not very Medievalish so they’re in the clear. Unluckily, for me, I’d truly like to add some names or give other subtle hints that a reader is in my books. But my stories tend to be epic sword fighting, mead drinking, and pages and pages of well…you know. So, it’s probably best I leave out anyone I actually know.

Are you a plotter or do you go with the flow, as a pantser?
Because #LoversandLegends is a series, I have to plot for a bit. Each book is a standalone, but there are families and villians entwined so I just need to make sure everyone is where they are supposed to be…then the story is out of my hands and into the heroine’s and hero’s.

Can you give novice writers some tips (do’s/don’ts)?
If you want to write a series, it helps to draft extensive spreadsheets for timeline and character development. That way when you’re on Book Ten, you can thank your past self for doing it!

What are your future plans as an author?
The next release will be in the #LoversandLegends series. I’ve got a villain who needs to be redeemed. Look for Reynold’s release later this year!

Last, but not least : Can you give my readers one teaser from your book, which is featured here on my blog, please?
Marriage of Convenience or Enemies to Lovers? Rory and Ailsa are definitely both. Enemies from differing clans, who negotiate to marry on the day they meet. What kind of marriage night would that be? A bit like:

‘Take off your gown.’ Rory’s voice was no more than an order and with a tone she imagined he gave to his men when training began.
A marriage for peace this was not. The most Ailsa could do now was to ensure her clan did not lose any more to King Edward. Still, she did not bend to any man. ‘And so I’m to simply take off my gown. No polite conversation, no offers of ale?’
A muscle clenched in his jaw. ‘What more is there to say? Do you think of yourself as unwilling, Wife?’
There was no possibility to feel like a wife. He had arrived this very day and was still her enemy though her father forced her to see reason. Even with such a logical decision and agreement to save her clan, Ailsa could think of no diplomatic reply.
Rory must have seen her indecision for his upper lip curved sardonically. ‘That’s what I thought. We both know what must occur tonight. Take off your gown.’
She wouldn’t. Not because she had some fanciful dreams of what her wedding night would be, but because she was worth more than this. ‘You first,’ she replied.
That stopped his frustrating pacing. ‘What did you say?’
‘I said you first to undress. Why should it be only me?

Isn’t that a great reason to pick up this book and to find out more?!
Thanks once again for this lovely interview, Nicole Locke.
