Excerpt :

The heels of his Hessian boots thudded against dusty floorboards as he made his way through the gloom. He pushed a door open with a flattened hand, wincing at the faint whine of a dry hinge. A flash of light and a single candle flared to life to force the shadows back. Cobwebs and dust covered every surface. A rickety table leaned heavily against the far wall, one leg broken off. Several chairs in disrepair were tossed about the room, a thick layer of dirt on the simple wooden frames.
Impatience nipped at his body as he stomped to the window to stare out the shattered, filthy glass. A pale harvest moon hung low in the sky, casting its eerie glow about like a fine cloak. His horse stood in the yard below, flicking its tail, as impatient to be gone as its master.
Hours late, the youth he was to meet had yet to make an appearance. “If it weren’t for the importance of the documents I seek, I’d abandon him to his fate,” he muttered as he raked a hand through his short dark hair.
Hurried footsteps along the stone walkway pulled him from the window and he turned. The crooked door swung inward to reveal the slim, simply dressed youth he’d been waiting for. “You’re late.”
“Beggin’ your pardon, milord. The baron did not retire as he is wont to do. He’s entertaining a pretty young lady this evening and I could not slip away.”
“I care not for excuses, boy, did you bring what I requested?”
“Indeed, sir. As you demanded, Monsieur Wolf.” His Adam’s apple bobbed with the force of his swallow as the boy dug into his shirt and pulled out a brown document. The boy held it out with a hand that trembled so; the parchment appeared to be waving.
The pale light revealed a dark wax seal upon the page, and he smiled with satisfaction as he traced a finger over it and recognized the familiar crest imprinted in the wax. Without taking his eyes from the parchment, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black leather pouch. “As promised, your livres. Your assistance is a great benefit to our king. I’ll send word if I need anything else. As per our usual agreement, turn the grey out into the southern pasture if the traitor receives another audience with our enemy.

Q&A :

Hi

First of all thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions, I really appreciate it. Here we go! 🙂

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I am a mother of four, an avid gamer (TTRPG’s), a tamer of chaos, and collector of ball-jointed dolls. I became an author to tame that chaos that lives inside my head. So many voices, ideas, landscapes – they needed to go somewhere so I put them on the page.

Which books did/do you love to read as a child/now as a grown-up?
I loved the RL Stine books growing up. Horror is one of my favorite genres. I still read them sometimes now. As an adult my tastes are expanding, however. My favorite authors to read now are Mercedes Lackey, Stephen King, and Neil Gaiman.

Is there a writer whose brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
Honestly, R.A. Salvatore. He writes fantasy novels set in the Forgotten Realms setting from Wizards of the Coast. I’d want to ask him if the novels are based on games he played and who he played with! 🙂

If you could, which fictional character (from your own book(s) or someone else’s) would you like to invite for tea and why?
From my books, none of them would sit for tea but James, from Hellfire, might be fun to have a drink with. From someone else’s book – Minerva MacGonagal, from the Harry Potter series. She seems like such a badass and yet so proper at the same time. I want to be her. 🙂

Do you have some rituals or habits whilst writing?
Music. Always have music. I have different playlists for each book, sometimes each character. Other than that, lots of water and snacks.

Where do you come up with your idea(s)? Do people in your life need to be worried? 😉
Ha! Shouldn’t everyone be worried? No, honestly, most of my ideas just fly into my head from things I see around me from my children playing with nerf guns (which I turned into a zombie story), to events that happen at the gaming table (how I got some of Hellfire and my fantasy novel Ashes to Embers), or things I see on TV that suddenly strike like a bolt of lightning and I say ‘Oh! That would make a great setting/idea/character!’ and off I go because the brain will not be contained.

Are you a plotter or do you go with the flow, as a pantser?
I am a plantser, as NaNo has come to phrase it. I start with a general plot and then see where the characters take me. Usually by the middle of the book, they have gone in an entirely different and unexpected direction from where I started or intended. Silly things.

Can you give novice writers some tips (do’s/don’ts)?
Do write as much as you possibly can whenever you can. Even if it is one sentence, one paragraph, one page. It adds up in the end. Don’t worry about spelling and grammar and making things perfect. You can’t make an empty page perfect, but you can make a full page almost perfect. 😉

What are your futureplans as an author?
I intend to keep writing as long as my fingers and voice (I use Dragon software when my hands are unresponsive) will allow. I intend to finish the Beyond Human series – there are two more books coming: one in beta at the moment and one in progress. I intend to grow my little corner of the creative world for as long as I can. So long as there is one person left to read it, I will write it. 🙂

Last, but not least : Can you give my readers one teaser from your book, which is featured here on my blog, please?

Hadi!
He coughed, choking on the rainwater that streamed down the sides of his broken nose. Each droplet dripped down the back of his throat along with the copper tang of his own blood.
Hadi!!
He took another gut punch to the stomach, curling in over the steel toe that delivered the painful blow. He wretched into the puddle beneath him, groaning pitifully after. The kicks continued, bruising his ribs, his sides and hips, his chest and back until he no longer had the strength to keep them away. Instead, he lay there, dead to the world around him, numb to the pain and hateful words spewed at him.
HADI!
The nightmare shattered like a broken window.
A violent hissing replaced the thunderous sound of falling rain. The taste and smell of copper evaporated into the odor of melting plastic.
“Get up!” someone barked in Arabic. The pain of the nightmare still lingered, but something about the barked order made Hadi Shahir’s limbs move, made him sit up and force his eyes open. Half of his room was on fire.
“Shit,” he cursed, immediately absorbing the flames into the palm of his hand. It burned the skin, reminding him of his curse. “Saleh, I’m sorry I-”
“You are late for work,” his cousin, Saleh, said heavily. “Mary already called. She is waiting for you.”
Hadi watched Saleh walk away with the fire extinguisher still in hand. The white foam was everywhere. There was absolutely nothing left of the television that once sat atop Hadi’s dresser. He could hear Nima, Saleh’s wife, asking if everything was all right as Saleh left the room and their baby girl crying from all the commotion Hadi caused.
The nightmare was the same every night.

Isn’t that a great reason to pick up this book and to find out more?!
Thanks once again for this lovely interview, Michelle Schad.

Q&A :

Hi

First of all thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions, I really appreciate it. Here we go! 🙂
Stefanie, thank you for inviting me over!

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I write Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal, Suspense and Contemporary Romance. Strong heroines and found families show up, no matter what genre I’ writing in. I owe the greater writing community and Pitch Wars for finding my voice as a writer.

Which books did/do you love to read as a child/now as a grown-up?
I was one of those horse and dog obsessed girls growing up, and inhaled stories like the Black Stallion series.I also found fantasy when I picked up a copy of The Prydian Chronicles and Jane Yolans Pit Dragon series.
I have added Science Fiction like Gideon the Ninth and Romance, but still have a ton of animal cozy mysteries on my eReader.

Is there a writer whose brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
I have been really lucky in having multiple authors generously offer their time and teaching skills over the years.
Sitting down with Arthur Conan Doyle and hearing his process when coming up with intricate mysteries for Sherlock to solve would be amazing.

If you could, which fictional character (from your own book(s) or someone else’s) would you like to invite for tea and why?
My characters tend to be trouble makers, so maybe someone a little more civilized. Although Bruce, the hero of Agent Zero, is an excellent, if temperamental chef.

Do you have some rituals or habits whilst writing?
I need coffee and a laptop, and I’m good. Purely by chance, I do tend to end up with playlists for each story since I usually have Spotify playing in the background.

Where do you come up with your idea(s)? Do people in your life need to be worried? 😉
Although my sister is positive I use her, ideas and characters usually pop into my head, fully formed. I think all authors have some part of their lived experiences find its way into stories.

Are you a plotter or do you go with the flow, as a pantser?
Hard core plotter. I learned that I need scenes laid out to glance at instead of wasting time on a plot or character that two chapters later, slowed the story pace, or acted out of character.
Both methods or a combo are all ,legitimate. The right way is the way that works for you.

Can you give novice writers some tips (do’s/don’ts)?
I always suggest reading craft blogs, like KM Weilands and Fiction University. Then finding critique groups or partners you click with, and not shy away from critiques and revisions.

What are your futureplans as an author?
I just launched a new Urban Fantasy Romance June 1st, and have books two and three coming in August and October.

Last, but not least : Can you give my readers one teaser from your book, which is featured here on my blog, please?

Chapter Two
Vee

Aside from using the wall for balance, he seemed fine. Adrenaline often masked pain though.
“Are you injured? Does anything hurt?” Despite knowing it hadn’t been a ghoul or vampire, I caught his thick right arm, rolling it to check the light skin for bites, then the same for his left. The tattoos I’d glimpsed when he walked into the bar like he owned it formed colorful sleeves, starting at his wrists and disappearing under his shirt. I caught his chin, his short blondish beard scratchy, and turned his head to check his throat.
He blinked and some of the intensity and intelligence I’d seen while he watched us sing eclipsed his bleary-eyed stupor. He hadn’t seemed drunk earlier, but he definitely was now.
“What?”
“Are you hurt?” He let me turn his head from side to side, the skin unblemished except for a hint of green ink curling up at the neck of his tee. I ran my hands down his sides, then knelt and repeated the search along his legs.
“No.”
“No, you’re not hurt?”
“Right. Quit.”
“I’m sorry, but I need to confirm. There. All done.” I rose and faced him. “All good except for the drunk off your butt part.”
He scowled and straightened, the strong jaw I’d felt under the facial hair setting into a stubborn line. “I’m not drunk.” His tone was fierce and for a moment, his words sharp and clear.
“Then what did you take? How long ago was it?” Crap. If he’d taken something after he came out here, it worked fast, meaning the drug was possibly as dangerous as the escaped cryptid. I caught his wrist again, pressing two fingers against the underside and monitoring his pulse.
“I’m not high and I sure as hell don’t abuse drugs,” he snapped, his frown lopsided. “Something must have been slipped into my drink.”
Maybe, maybe not, but his pulse was strong and only as elevated as confronting a large predator would account for. “Any friends inside waiting for you?”
“No. Told that shithead Lewis to piss off.” His gaze lost focus.
“Sounds like you’ve had an eventful day—ahh, here we go.” I opened the wallet I’d palmed during his exam. “Mister Kantor.”
“How’d—”
I flipped through the rest of its contents. The Colorado address on his license didn’t help me out, nor was there a keycard to a local hotel inside. His phone was equally unhelpful, password protected, and the code wasn’t 1234. Kimi, my other sister and teammate, could crack it in under sixty seconds, but since she was occupied searching for our mystery cryptid, I was on my own.
“Hey! Put that fucking back.”
I complied, tucking it into his pocket, but kept the key fob I discovered. “I hope this serves as a life lesson about not getting wasted and following sketchy women into alleys to make out.” I glossed over the part about it not being a woman he’d followed.
“I wasn’t fucking following her, damn it. And I told you I’m not drunk.”

Isn’t that a great reason to pick up this book and to find out more?!

Juan of The Dead CoverGo on a cruise, they said. Learn about other cultures, they said. It’ll be fun, they said.
Yeah, I thought my birthday cruise would be all sexy pool boys with fruity drinks and me working on my epic summer tan. Instead, I sacrificed my favorite Jimmy Choos and my gorgeous Coach handbag to some awful earthquake while shopping in a crappy Mexican port. That place is getting zero stars.
Oh yeah, and I sacrificed my life. Lucky for me this totally hunky (but nerdy) anthropologist, Jon, hauled my hot corpse in to the nearby ancient Mayan or whatever temple and performed some sort of creepy voodoo ritual on me.
Forget all the garbage from Hollywood about shuffling, brain-obsessed, homicidal corpses. Maybe that’s how it was in the 70’s but those misguided souls also thought polyester was a good fashion statement. What the movies got right is that someone always wants to kill off the undead, and I’m no different. I’m too young and too hot to leave the party this soon. I’ve got a second chance, but Jon and I need to know what’s going on with my post-life situation before someone finishes me off for good.

He looked at my shoes again. “I don’t know how you’d have done climbing the stairs in those things. They aren’t very practical.”
Did he insult Choo? I bristled.
“Excuse me? Practical? Who wears practical shoes? Old women who’ve lost all sense of fashion? Nurses? I don’t think so. These are awesome shoes and they match my outfit. That’s what matters!”
He looked me up and down. His gaze lingered over me in a way that sent a shiver up my spine. I sat up a little straighter, pushing the girls out a tad. He shifted in his chair and looked away. “I, um, didn’t notice. I really don’t know much about fashion.”
Didn’t take a neurosurgeon to figure that one out. His faded and mismatched clothes looked like something from a bad blue-light special. Oh boy.
I reminded myself that I was way outta this guy’s league. I was the kind of girl geeks like him had wet dreams about. He was not the kind of guy I had dreams about. Normally.

“How is it that I’ve been gone for only four days and yet,” my brother said as way of entering the room and flicking my inclined feet off the edge of the armchair in our reading room. “You cause so much mayhem. Look at this room, show some restraint.”
“Come now, Amell, don’t be such a sourpuss,” I said dropping the girl’s bloody wrist from my face. I was sprawled out in our reading room. It was decorated with wooden and polished furniture and a black marble fireplace. It was where Amell often read books and I would from time to time pester him.
This time, instead of walking into his peaceful and boring space, he was greeted by three women and two men near unconscious from blood loss and well, perhaps I was a bit messy. Fresh blood stained the furniture and seeped through the lush white carpet. In my defense, the fire still crackled untouched and that was the only descent feature in this room. I was doing him a favor. “Take a seat, I’ve missed you.”

Excerpt :

I couldn’t find my penis. I’d last seen it on the nightstand next to my walk-in freezer, but when I emerged in the morning, it wasn’t there. I didn’t need a penis, but I’d had twenty human years with one, and I’d gotten used to it.
“Mrs. Ross? Are you here? Have you seen my penis?” “You need a new one, Waylon.” Mrs. Betsy Ross’ specter floated into my room, holding the missing appendage.
“I know, but they have to be fresh and coming upon a juicy, still-warm body is a tricksy thing. Can you please sew this one back on?”
“You don’t urinate or have sexual relations.”
I sighed. “Mrs. Ross, it is humiliating enough to ask you to connect my male member to my body, please don’t make it worse.”
“Fine.” She sniffed. “Sit on the couch.”
I followed her to the living room, placed my rear on the couch, spread my legs, and closed my eyes while one of history’s greatest seamstresses made me whole again. If I could have blushed, I would have reddened from my toes to my ears. As it was, I squirmed until she smacked me on the thigh.
“If you want this sewn on properly, you’ll stop your fidgeting.”
I held still but stared out the sliding back doors at an Evergreen Pear tree, fists clenched. The tree’s beauty distracted me, the white flowers still visible, the bees and birds swooping in and out. I was glad it was thriving in the northern exposure. I had worried it was too far west and would need more early morning sun, but it was doing well.
“There,” Mrs. Ross said, rubbing her hands together, bringing me back to the situation at hand. “I’m done, but it looks mighty sad.”
“What’s looking mighty sad?”
I hadn’t heard him come in, but Dr. Samuel Early peered over Mrs. Ross’ shoulder, extracted his reading glasses from his shirt pocket, and placed them on his nose.
“It’s too gray,” he said.
“It’s not.” I pushed them both away and closed my legs.

To promote this book I have an excerpt, but before I let you read it first some ‘basic’ information.

About the Author :

Krista Cagg Author PicAccording to her mother, Krista has lived in her own imagination since birth. The real world let her down. It was, frankly, boring beyond belief. After she discovered fantasy novels and comics there was no going back. This didn’t win her any popularity contests (or dates) until after high school. Art school introduced her to other geeks and the wonderful world of AD&D. A love for RP eventually led to LARP (the goth/vampire era of her life). Finally, sci-fi/fantasy/fandom conventions introduced her to the beautiful world of Steampunk. Music. Clothing. And books. She dove into the books she took a shine to and absorbed them. But something was missing. She wasn’t satisfied. During her recovery from neck surgery something she’d heard somewhere stuck out in her mind: “If you can’t find the stories you want to read then write them yourself.” On a couch in Savannah, GA. with Sons of Anarchy playing in the background, The William’s Hunt began.
Currently, Krista lives in her home town in Pennsylvania with five cats, a husband, and a weiner dog, Pete, who watches from the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
Check out her website and follow her on social media.

Synopsis :

The Milan Job_Krista CaggMeet Captain Alexandria de Sade, the proud and once loyal captain of Naviwerks chrono-ship #25. When she learned the truth about how the company was fleecing their customers she turned her back on the promotion they offered her, left the man she loved without a word, and disappeared with her ship.
With a plan in mind to undermine Naviwerks’ business of artifact and heirloom retrieval, Captain Alex hired on several like-minded misfits to crew her chrono-ship which she re-christened The William’s Hunt. They are: An awkward but genius Horotech, an irascible ex-marine, a flamboyant playboy, a churlish physician, and a hot-shot pilot.
Their first venture: go to Milan, Italy 1490 and retrieve the working model of Leonardo da Vinci’s Gran Cavallo before Naviwerks does. What should have been a simple snatch and run mission for the newly formed band of pirates goes south nearly immediately. In their struggle to recover, they learn that there is much more behind Naviwerks’ actions. Captain Alex and the crew of The William’s Hunt are the only ones that stand a chance of putting things right, and it seems as if her crew’s every step takes them deeper and deeper into discovering just how nefarious Naviwerks truly is.

Excerpt :

“They control the Guard.” Laurence’s voice filled the silence. He said it with a hesitant tone, but there it was, and he swallowed nervously as both Nigel and Geri turned to look at him with expressions that clearly said he should explain himself.
“Well, it only makes sense,” he offered with a slight tremor in his voice. “Why else risk exposing such a high profile entity as the Papal Swiss Guard before their official existence if they did not feel they could control the situation? At this time it was the church that chronicled the happenings. No one would gainsay what they wrote down as the truth.” Laurence began to blink more rapidly, and his fingers fidgeted as the Historian and the Security Officer closed in on him, Nigel in fascination, while Geri looked like he was growing impatient again.
Laurence continued. “So to them it wasn’t a risk. Look, I’m simply following a line of logic. You needn’t look at me like that, Mr. Reynolds. If I am wrong then it still makes sense that more Agents will not be in Milan waiting for us since w-…”
Nigel raised a hand. “No, I believe you are correct.” Oh, their little Horotech was cleverer than Captain Alex led them to believe. His mind was sharp indeed. He had his own growing reasoning for why it made sense for Naviwerks to have Agents in the Papal Swiss Guard if not outright control of the group. It would mean far darker dealings within the corporation than any of them had guessed, and Nigel wasn’t willing to commit to the hypothesis just yet so he kept these thoughts to himself for now. “But perhaps this mystery is one we should pursue at another time. Right now we have a model to obtain. Then we can return to berth where we can puzzle this.”
